Problem

Hekimhan Mining was experiencing severe operational disruptions due to recurring blockages in HGG gas duct.

Hekimhan Mining, a key producer of manganese-bearing iron ore in MalatyaÕs Hekimhan district, was experiencing severe operational disruptions due to recurring blockages in the HGG gas duct. These blockages required an average of seven days of planned shutdowns each month, three days for ash cooling and four days for labor-intensive cleaning by three shifts of seven workers. As a result, the company lost 12,600 tons of monthly production (23.3%), totaling 151,200 tons annually. Additionally, cleaning activities consumed 84 man-days per month and 1,008 annually, significantly increasing labor and maintenance costs, further compromising overall operational efficiency and annual production targets.

Solution

Internal view of gas duct exposing blockages that led to seven-day monthly shutdowns.

To address the gas duct blockage issue, Martin Engineering recommended and installed Multiport Air Cannons: two 8-valve systems in the first section, adapted to existing dimensions, and a 5-valve Multiport system integrated into the kiln outlet hood in the second section. The Martin® MultiPort Air Cannon utilizes a single air reservoir with a control unit to replace up to eight traditional tank-and-valve air cannons, enhancing process efficiency while simplifying installation and maintenance. This solution ensures continuous material flow by dislodging buildup with powerful air blasts from strategically positioned nozzles and the Multiport system. As a result, blockages were eliminated, additional labor was no longer required, and production losses were prevented.

Result

Martin® MultiPort Air Cannon improved material flow, reduced labor needs, and prevented production losses

The implementation of the Martin® MultiPort Air Cannon system eliminated the need for planned shutdowns to clear gas duct blockages. This advancement prevented the annual production loss of 151,200 tons (23.3%) and removed the need for 1,008 man-days of labor previously required for cleaning operations. As a result, the plant achieved uninterrupted production, significantly enhanced operational efficiency, and avoided approximately 514 million TL in economic losses. This solution not only restored system reliability but also delivered substantial long-term financial and operational value to the company.
